We have been recording oral histories to document stories from people in the Royston community. Oral histories are often quite inaccessible for people to engage with, so we developed a partnership with Toonspeak Young People’s Theatre Company to widen their audience. Over a ten-week period, we worked with young people in S1-S3 to create short films inspired by the oral histories collected from Royston Community members. The workshops focused on digital skills including stop motion animation, greenscreen, editing, and graphics. The young people have done an amazing job at making these oral histories more accessible to younger audiences.
The sessions culminated in a screening event at Roystonhill Community Hub, bringing together the young people, their families, the community members and loved ones. The event had around 40 people in attendance and was a celebration of Royston’s history and the creativity of the young people involved.
